According the the shop manual I have, a person is supposed to insert the Stihl setting gage which I have between the ignition module and the flywheel magnets. Next, a person is suppose to push the ignition module against the setting gage, and flywheel magnets while torquing the torx screws to 9 newton meters. Next, the shop manual says to remove the setting gage, and measure the resulting air gap which is 0.
Sounds easy enough. Here's the problem, the stihl setting gage seems to set the air gap too tight, like 0. It seems as though the center coil pick up on the ignition module has a wider air gap. Now my question, what is the proper way to measure an ignition module air gap?
Shall a person measure the gap between the flywheel magnets and the ignition module arms? Please enlighten me, I am a bit confused Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After years of reliable service I took it out last September and I just couldn't get the thing to fire up at all. I finally got around to taking a good look at it today and stripped it down to try and fix it.
After reading a bit about what the problem could be I went through these steps: Disconnected the switch to rule out faulty switch - no difference.
Check the gap between the flywheel and ignition coil - it looked OK but I set it again using a business card as a spacer. Remove the plug and check for a spark on the plug whilst grounding the body of the plug and cranking the starter - no spark. Replaced the plug with one that I know to work from my Stihl chainsaw - still no spark. Removed the plug completely and stuck a steel rod in the spark plug boot. Made sure there was a gap between the rod and the engine body and cranked - no spark. Checked continuity between the plug boot and the two terminals on the ignition module - no continuity between any two of those three points.
At this point I was all set to go and buy a new ignition module but I though I would try putting my Fluke multimeter on the plug boot to see if there was any voltage when I cranked.2020 bicycles

Should I just get a replacement ignition module? Thanks guys, Paul. An ignition needs a minimum of volts or so to jump the gap. I would not use you nice Fluke meter for spark testing. It won't work for that purpose and will get fried. Instead get a spark test tool for small engines that looks like a spark plug and clamps to ground.Compression should be at least pounds to even start, it will not run properly at that amount though.

Tighten the screws that hold the ignition module in place with the spacer card still in position. When finished, slide the card from between the flywheel and ignition module. The card should slide out easily with mild resistance. Reattach the spark plug wire to the spark plug. Reposition the outer housing on the machine and reinstall the screws that hold it in place. Since an accurate air gap is so essential, the best thing to do is measure the gap with a feeler gauge.
